it does not make any sense to try to ask it globally. Depending on the region of the planet you live, you have more or less choices.
If you live in th ethird world, for example, to be developer for more then 3 years means a poor perspective. You are forced to try a manager position, doesn't matter what you think about that :(

I live in the third world (Paraguay). And while I understand what you mean, I have seen quite the opposite. Excelente developers are in high demand.. and often command very sizeable salaries. Of course, if you want to be a millionaire.. you'll need more luck, business savvy and you'll need to do business with other people of the same sort. But it isn't easy to become a millionaire in the US either (in fact I've found that the third world is an easier place to start your own business).
