GlassFish Installer on AIX does not configure UpdateTool Bootstrap

    Details

      Description

When using the Installer in default mode, which enables the "Install UpdateTool" option, at the end of the process and in the Summary screen. The following is displayed.

      Product Name Status
      Update Tool Bootstrap Not Configured

I believe this is a product limitation that either has to be disabled when installing or documented.

Following changes should be made to fully address this issue:

        • AIX distributions will not contain updatetool bootstrap scripts since only pkg client is supported on AIX.
        • Installer screen will be modified to contain only option to bootstrap pkg client. Option to enable update client is not valid on AIX since notifier is not supported. Resource strings should also be adjusted to avoid mentioning Update Tool.
        • Installer's update client bootstrap invocation will be modified to bootstrap only pkg client on AIX platform.
        • Update Tool Bootstrap component screen name will be changed to Pkg Bootstrap. This may not be trivial since Open Installer backend relies on current component name in many ways.

Issue has been mostly addressed in b10. Updatetool and pkg.bat stub scripts have been removed from AIX distributions and installer's configurator has been updated to attempt to install only pkg and not updatetool client on AIX. As the result, UpdateTool bootstrap configuration will be reported as successful (in the absence of genuine issue) in AIX installations.

However, installer screen wording and component naming have been left as-is since required changes were too risky at this point and also affected localization.

Just tried it and I don't see the error as before on the "Update Tool Bootstrap". I understand the risk and hope that we will document somewhere that automatic updates are not enabled or supported in AIX.

Absolutely - I'll open separate docs issue so that we can document update client limitations on AIX, either in Admin guide or in Release Notes.

Just to note: option to enable update client still makes some sense on AIX even in the absence of notifier implementation since it should also control whether Admin Console checks for available updates via pkg Java API or not.
