      Description

Because the property of platform independence, JAI ImageIO should offer pure
Java JPEG and JPEG-LS decoder like its CLib version. And in database, such pure
Java decoder can be easily called without security problem.

I would like to add my voice to this issue. For those of us who work with medical images, there is a considerable swath of DICOMs that contain pixel data encoded as JPEG-LS. The Windows-native reader works fine but we are unable to decode these images on OS X.

        The spec is here: http://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-T.87-199806-I/en

An example implementation in Java (under GPL) here: http://dev.loci.wisc.edu/trac/software/browser/branches/4.2/components/bio-formats/src/loci/formats/codec/LosslessJPEGCodec.java?rev=6968

We need a platform-independent implementation of JPEG-LS in pure Java that is not bound by the terms of a GPL.
