The NASA World Wind Java project needs the ability to select text based on mouse
clicks. Their selection scheme is based on colors: they draw each selectable
item in the scene with a different color and then map back the color under the
mouse pointer to the object.
If the TextRenderer had the ability to draw the bounding rectangle of the text
instead of the text itself, this would allow this sort of selection scheme to be
used by applications. The application could even choose a different color for
each glyph to support letter-by-letter selection.
