I just checked and this works properly on Windows XP. The checkboxes show
        disabled visuals.

Need to investigate whether this is a bug in the OS/theme (Solaris10 with JDS
        with "Traditional" theme)

I can also verify that it works fine on XP.

It appears to be a bug when native l&f is used on a disabled and selected
checkbox. It works if I either don't select the checkbox (leave it unchecked)
        or if I don't use native l&f.

Steve, I have a standalone test case - is this something Soraya can report and a
l&f bug? If not, I suppose I can file a jdk bug. Once it is filed elsewhere,
        should this issue be closed?

I've also reproduced the same problem with SwingSetDemo2 on GTK L&F.

Steve will report to Soraya as a L&F issue - we can't fix it on our side.
