Yahoo groups ajug-vic has been the forum home for a long time. It has the history of the Java group on there and still a wide number of subscribers which will allow us to reach out to previous members. In addition it is free.
There is facebook and google integration to sign up with.
One sticking point is that even with these helper methods to sign up, some members are still complaining that they need to select a unique username when going to post and this is a real pain given yahoo is so old and the form doesnt give quick feedback to afford finding a name quickly.
- use the mailing list options only rather than the website. This will allow people to subscribe to the list and post without needing to use the yahoo form. I believe its a matter of emailing firstname.lastname@example.org (or something like that).
- [hard] yahoo supports open id for authentication. provide an openid auth server that allows our users to sign up easily
