Apparently it is a JSF 2.0 spec requirement to automatically add a h:messages
component to a view when the ProjectStage is Development (see [1] and [2] and
the related MyFaces issue [3]).

However I couldn't find this in the spec-pdf or the javadocs, so this has to be
added somewhere!
