[VISUALVM-533] VisualVM blocks Eclipse Juno Created: 21/Nov/12  Updated: 30/Nov/12  Resolved: 26/Nov/12

Windows 7 Pro
Java 1.7.0_5 or _9, 64-bit
Eclipse Juno (4.2)

Tags: eclipse, freeze, juno

 Description

Selected version 1.3.4 in the Affects Version/s list, because 1.3.5 isn't listed yet...

When I run VisualVM 1.3.5 (standalone) on Windows 7 Pro, Eclipse Juno (4.2, 64bit, run with Java 1.7.0_5 or _9) becomes frozen: I cannot bring it to front from the task bar, although I can see it in the small preview. I can iconify windows to see the window, but it doesn't react to clicks, etc. As if a glass pane was in front of it. Windows doesn't report it as non responsive. A simple close window command from the task bar is ineffective, I have to kill the process from the task manager.

Closing VisualVM doesn't solve the issue...

If I start VisualVM first, Eclipse remains stuck on the splash screen.

Same problem with Eclipse Indigo (3.7) on similar environment.
Eclipse is seen as "Local application", with a generic icon.
If I run the JVisualVM of Java 1.7.0_09, it shows Eclipse by its name, with its icon, and the problem doesn't happen.

Comment by thurka [ 23/Nov/12 ]

Can you please tell me on which JDK (32bit or 64bit) do you run VisualVM 1.3.5 ? It looks like JVisualVM is running 64bit JDK, while VisualVM 1.3.5 is running 32bit JDK.

Comment by thurka [ 23/Nov/12 ]

We can confirm that this is happening when you run VisualVM on different architecture (32bit versus 64bit) than monitored application. This is WIndows only issue.

Comment by philho [ 24/Nov/12 ]

Ah, since the binary is a simple exe, I had no second thoughts about this...
I am not in front of the computer where I reported this, but I know that the installed JRE (in the system) is Java 7, 32bit edition, because we have to run our software with this version from Java Web start.
JAVA_HOME might point somewhere else (a JDK), but I don't know if you use this environment variable.

As reported, Eclipse does run on a 64bit JVM.

Comment by thurka [ 26/Nov/12 ]

Fixed in revision 3176.

bugfix #533, on Windows, try to attach only to process with he the same architecture (32bit/64bit)

Comment by philho [ 27/Nov/12 ]

You mean VisualVM attaches itself to all Java processes it finds as soon as it starts?
Because the freezing happens when I run it, without even taking an action in it.

It is great if you found a fix.

How do we choose on which VM VisualVM will run? On Windows, it is a simple .exe file, I see no .ini file like Eclipse has (allowing to specify the Java to use). I don't know if it uses the default Java runtime put at C:\Windows\system32\java.exe by the last Java installer, or the one specified by JAVA_HOME (not really, actually, according to my test) or something else.

I mean, I might want to examine 32- or 64-bit Java programs, so I need to run VisualVM with the same VM than the one they use (I always have several JDK on my system...), so I need a mean (command line option?) to specify it.

Comment by thurka [ 27/Nov/12 ]

Try to run
visualvm.exe --help
from commandline to get list of commandline options.

Comment by thurka [ 30/Nov/12 ]

The fix is also available on 1.3.5 plugin center.

 Description

Due to a different understanding of what API vs. Implementation are by Eclipse Foundation, there's a blocking issue based on the current LICENSE.txt file in Unit-API see https://java.net/jira/browse/UNITSOFMEASUREMENT-64
This Bugzilla ticket lines out the problem for a downstream Eclipse project (SmartHome) wanting to use JSR 363:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=434006

Note, this is a blocker mainly for Eclipse and downstream projects like SmartHome.

Comment by keilw [ 23/Sep/15 ]

So based on what was mentioned in a discussion with Jean-Marie, Eclipse and PMO reps, we would propose a change by putting the full Spec License text into the Specification document (https://docs.google.com/document/d/12KhosAFriGCczBs6gwtJJDfg_QlANT92_lhxUWO2gCY/edit#heading=h.ejfpuk6yf28c) instead of a short version like JSR 354 did plus putting a LICENSE.txt that matches the BSD 3 clause license here https://github.com/unitsofmeasurement/unit-api/blob/master/LICENSE.txt make Eclipse "happy" without violating any mandatory requirements for JSRs from a JCP/PMO point of view?

Comment by keilw [ 23/Oct/15 ]

This (based on a note from JSR 375) pretty much captures the understanding by Eclipse and others on spec vs. software:

// This source code implements specifications defined by the Java
// Community Process. In order to remain compliant with the specification
// DO NOT add / change / or delete method signatures!
Comment by keilw [ 28/Sep/16 ]

SmartHome plans another CQ or update of existing ones for 1.0. This may take a while, but not in our control. Will close if the actual CQs are resolved.

As Eclipse IoT projects like SmartHome signalled interest in JSR 363 it should be made available to Eclipse Orbit, by filing a CQ (see http://www.eclipse.org/projects/dev_process/ip-process-in-cartoons.php) and where appropriate upload it to a P2 repo at Eclipse.org

Smarthome recently added its own CQ, should get things going at the pace possible with Eclipse legal

Comment by keilw [ 07/Mar/15 ]

Eclipse PMC still working on it. Likely nothing happens before EclipseCon, but promising signs.

Comment by keilw [ 18/Aug/15 ]

Eclipse IP team doesn't understand or approve the Spec License. Hence the API of JSR 363, 354 and 107 can't be used by Eclipse.org projects.
So be it, then they need to stick to Unit-API Legacy forever

To integrate netbeans with scenebuklder llike below

For those not that familiar with NetBeans and SceneBuilder what Geertjan is trying to say is:
1) Go to the Tools Menu in NetBeans 7.2 and select "Options"
2) In the Options Dialog select the "Java" button at top
3) Go to the JavaFX tab and enter the directory where you have SceneBuilder installed i.e. C:\Dev\Scene Builder 1.0

You can now double click on FXML files to open SceneBuilder.

http://mrwhatis.com/javafx-database.html
to see CRUD using javafX
Despite JavaFX technology's beta state, the capabilities used in this technology allow you to create runnable desktop applications.

The Silverlight and Flex projects, often referred to as JavaFX competitors, can only be used for recreational or multimedia content.

Comparison of JavaFX, Flex and Silverlight Architectures
What is JavaFX?

Java FX is a set of Java libraries which compiles JavaFX Script (formerly known as F3) code into Java code (and eventually bytecode).

The script language is optimized for describing GUI layouts. Since JavaFX is build on the JRE and allows you to easily call Java classes, any tasks that cannot be solved in JavaFX directly can be handled by Java code. JavaFX is convenient and powerful.

What is Flex?

Flex is a compiler which takes an MXML description of a GUI and compiles it into a .swf file that can be displayed in a browser or run separately using the Flash plugin. The resulting .swf file is similar to Flash objects that are often presented as advertisements on web pages. There is almost no access to the file system when using Flex.

What is Silverlight?

Silverlight is a Microsoft plugin available for most major browsers on Windows and Mac (no Unix support yet). You can access Silverlight's functions from JavaScript and build a form or drawing by writing an XAML description (an XML file). In Windows you can access system components from JavaScript via OLE. Support for direct acccess to the CLR (Microsoft's runtime for C#) is under development in Silverlight v2.

Conclusion: JavaFX has an advantage by having access to the mature Java platform. All three platforms are new and under active development.

This would require a change in the LICENSE file of both APIs, thus it is impossible to "just throw it in", if done, it must be under a MR.

After the configured start up timeout has been reached I get the following error dialog:

Unable to start server on time.
java.util.concurrent.TimeoutException

Glassfish hangs at 69% when started via Eclipse. Startup from command line, Netbeans or IntelliJ works just fine. So this seems to be a Glassfish Tools issue in Eclipse. Google tells me that I am not the only one with this issue. This means Glassfish 4.1 cannot be used via Eclipse, therefore I guess this is a critical issue!

For me the issues started when I updated to the latest Glassfish tools some weeks ago.

the latest Glassfish Tools (8.2.0.201507100122) fixed it for me (see https://java.net/jira/browse/GLASSFISHPLUGINS-376 & https://java.net/jira/browse/GLASSFISHPLUGINS-378)

 Description

When using a different log formatter than

java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler.formatter=com.sun.enterprise.server.logging.ODLLogFormatter

the Glassfish Console displayed in the GF Eclipse plugin is always empty.

e.g.
java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler.formatter=com.sun.enterprise.server.logging.UniformLogFormatter

Same applies when excluding fields:

com.sun.enterprise.server.logging.GFFileHandler.excludeFields=tid,timeMillis,levelValue

The Netbeans Plugin is a lot more fault-tolerant in this point...

I'm tired of waiting for this to be fixed. This is a show stopper for anyone wanting to use slf4j + logback.

I've fixed the issue for myself by reverse compiling the plugin over a year ago. If this were an open source project, I could submit it for review.

Here's how I did it: make the following patch to oracle.eclipse.tools.glassfish.log.PatternLogFilterV4.java:

@@ -31,18 +31,20 @@
         this.record.setVersion(m.group(2));
         this.record.setClassInfo(m.group(5));
         this.record.setThreadInfo(m.group(6));
         this.record.setMessage(m.group(9));
         result = this.formatter.formatLogRecord(this.record);
         reset();
       }
-      else if (!isReadingUserMessage())
+      else
       {
         GlassfishToolsPlugin.logMessage("Log record that does not match expected format detected!");
         GlassfishToolsPlugin.logMessage(this.buffer.toString());
+        result = this.buffer.toString();
+        reset();
       }
     }
     else
     {
       this.buffer.append(line);
       this.buffer.append('\n');
     }

Decompile oracle.eclipse.tools.glassfish_7.3.3.201412231459.jar (or equivalent) and compile it as an eclipse plugin (no easy feat), then replace the class file in the jar with the newly compiled one.

Send me a message and I'll email you the .class file you need.

Sorry for not really commenting this issue. i can just endorse codeturner, that it´s really sad, that this bug is still not fixed.

@codeturner: sorry i found no other way to contact you. May you please send me the .class file for the eclipse glassfish plugin to rotz@outlook.com
This would be great.
Thanks in advance

Comment by codeturner [ 27/Feb/15 ]

I published the fix to the class file at https://github.com/codeturner/misc/blob/master/patch-for-oracle.eclipse.tools.glassfish.jar/oracle/eclipse/tools/glassfish/log/PatternLogFilterV4.class

To fix, simply replace the class file in the oracle.eclipse.tools.glassfish_*.jar. I've tested this in v6.3 and v7.3.

Any news on this issue ? Is happening also for this environment: Windows 7, Eclipse Kepler & Glassfish Tools 6.0.3.201306271729

It's really annoying specially with long stacktraces. Notice that log file in Glassfish have newline characters, but these newlines doesn't appear in Eclipse Console Window.

Comment by dmitriy.balakin [ 11/Jul/13 ]

The latest version of GlassFish Tools 6.1.0.201307081622 6.2.0.201307232054 still has the same behavior, expect that attached exception logged at Level.WARNING or Level.SEVERE now appears with newlines, but the log message still does not have a line break.

Comment by piotrik [ 14/Aug/13 ]

Guys, to be sure I understand the issue, could you put into comment small part of the log from server.log file and the corresponding part from Eclipse console view?

Comment by gregnoe [ 14/Aug/13 ]

Here's a pastebin link of the text below, you can see the line numbering there easier:

http://pastebin.com/qaetE9F5

In the Eclipse console, all one line (hard to see with this formatting), notice "...trying to reset the response.javax.ejb.EJBException..."

Fixed. Please verify after updating from http://download.java.net/glassfish/eclipse/kepler update site (Help->Install etc.).

updating from http://download.java.net/glassfish/eclipse/kepler

It seems that the repository still has the old version of the plugin (6.2.1.201308081741), which is the old behavior. Need to wait for an update?

Comment by dmitriy.balakin [ 21/Aug/13 ]

Please verify after updating from

6.2.1.201308190137 - now it works as expected!

Comment by lgraf [ 25/Sep/13 ]

Exceptions are now printed correctly to the console (version: 6.2.1.201309191537).
But with this version an additional timestamp (2013-09-25T15:30:05.679+0200|) is printed in each line. Is it possible to configure the logging pattern or disable the printing of the timestamp?

Comment by sstlaurent [ 21/Oct/13 ]

This issue is unresolved for eclipse juno glassfish tools.

Comment by piotrik [ 23/Oct/13 ]

that is true since we are only updating plugins for current version of Eclipse. I will try to find out if we can break this rule.

I have the same problem with Eclipse Kepler.

Comment by Stefan Horochovec [ 13/May/13 ]

I change my environment and server works fine

  • Ubuntu 13.04;
  • OpenJDK7;
  • Eclipse Juno SR2;
  • Glassfish Tools: 5.2.2.201305090916
Comment by piotrik [ 14/May/13 ]

Hi Stefan,
so you are still experiencing the issue on Windows? I tried on Win 7 with very similar environment and couldn't simulate it. It will be great if you provide more details, e.g. steps, your eclipse workspace description and logs.

Comment by Stefan Horochovec [ 16/May/13 ]

Yes, I´m using Windows 8 too. Today a new version of Glassfish is published (b89). I will test again and post the results.

Comment by Stefan Horochovec [ 27/May/13 ]

OK

I´m testing again on Windows 8 and everything works fine.

I think this Issue can be closed.

Regards

Comment by balusc [ 26/Aug/13 ]

I encountered exactly this problem after upgrading JDK. It turns out that GlassFish plugin was still referring the old JDK installation which does not exist anymore. You need to fix it by doubleclicking the GlassFish server entry in Servers view and then click the "Runtime Environment" link and then set the JRE entry to the right JDK.

A "quick'n'dirty" fix would be removing the GlassFish server entry altogether and create a new one.

Comment by Palmer_Eldritch [ 31/Oct/13 ]

Tried to do as BalusC suggests and encountered :

1. Open up Preferences > Server >Runtime Environments
2. Click on edit for a glassfish 3.1 server
3. Edit (I changed the JRE) and hit OK
4. NPE :

 Description

On a fresh unzip of Eclipse Juno SR2, with only the GlassFish WTP runtime installed from http://download.java.net/glassfish/eclipse/juno and a fresh unzipped GlassFish (glassfish-4.0-b84.zip), GlassFish won't start.

The progress view in Eclipse immediately goes to 69% and keeps hanging indefinitely. Upon killing GlassFish from the command line (the stop button in the progress view has no effect), the following appears in Eclipse console:

Starting the very same GlassFish unzip from the command line using ./asadmin start-domain works without any problems. When I start GlassFish from the command line first, and then start GlassFish from Eclipse, the WTP runtime seems to detect GlassFish is already running and goes immediately to started mode. I can then deploy projects to it, but debugging doesn't work directly this way.

I also tried with a previous build of GlassFish (b83) but that too didn't work (same hang at 69%).

Hi, we are looking at this, it is kind of tricky... I am not able to simulate it on my mac, but on the other hand I was able to reproduce it on windows... I hope it won't be some sneaky concurrent issue...

Comment by piotrik [ 22/Apr/13 ]

Hi,

the issue was caused by not reading the java.lang.Process output so it blocked itself. Resolved in current version for Juno, for Kepler it should be up this week.

Thanks for reporting.

Comment by arjan tijms [ 27/Apr/13 ]

piotrik, I just tried the latest plugin on OS X/Juno and it now works! Thanks for fixing this

Comment by piotrik [ 29/Apr/13 ]

Resolved by reading the output stream of the startup process.

Comment by yfain [ 12/May/13 ]

I have the same issue on GlassFish 4 b87 (MAC OS 10.8.3, Eclipse Juno, Java 1.7). I have the latest GlassFish plugin and Eclipse Juno, but it still hanged at 69%.

Right-clicked on the server in Eclipse and selected Clean. Now it dies even sooner at 23% with the following message:

Starting GlassFish 4.0 at localhost has encountered a problem:

The Eclipse plugin cannot communicate with the GlassFish server....
The Eclipse plugin cannot communicate with the GlassFish server.Please, check for antivirus software blocking or monitoring this port, or firewall configuration, or VPN setup which might block some ports...

It seems that the Clean option is also buggy.

Comment by yfain [ 12/May/13 ]

Installed the B88 build of GF, which fixed the issue.

Comment by piotrik [ 14/May/13 ]

Hi yfain,
I tried to reproduce it with B83 (Mac OS, Juno) and it worked for me. But if you hit this issue again, definitely let us know. You can add some logs then - the way how to provide detailed log is described here https://java.net/jira/browse/GLASSFISHPLUGINS-364 - comment from April/24.

When creating a run configuration for the GlassFish Server, via either

there is an error being displayed: No server selected

There is a drop-down to select a server, but it's not possible to use (appears to be empty and doesn't react on clicks). It's subsequently not possible to explicitly run the launch configuration.

Modifying the supposedly associated launch configuration with the Glassfish entry in the Servers view only seems to create new launch configurations. This is because you downloaded plugin from Eclipse marketplace and not from our Update site http://download.java.net/glassfish/eclipse/indigo[juno], I admit the presence of the old version of plugin is very confusing and we have to do something about it immediately. Sorry for inconvenience.

 Description

I've installed the fresh Eclipse Indigo SR2 by using the eclipse-jee-indigo-SR2-win32-x86_64.zip. Then I install the Glassfish plugin as it has been mentioned at http://bit.ly/xaDdgi and http://bit.ly/ygeNLr by using the Eclipse update site as http://bit.ly/xFsbJV .

By overall, the plugin is great and works very well. The internal Glassfish 3.1.2 server is registered to the Eclipse workspace correctly.

Anyhow, Every time I started the Eclipse, the internal Glassfish 3.1.2 always be kept registering, e.g. GlassFish 3.1.2 at localhost, GlassFish 3.1.2 at localhost(2),GlassFish 3.1.2 at localhost(3)...

My workaround is to uninstall the Glassfish 3.1.2 Application Server Runtime from the Eclipse as I've mentioned at http://bit.ly/AqGKhr .

Comment by cheinemann [ 17/Mar/12 ]

This seems to be only a problem at Windows. The plugin compares directories of the runtime installations, which have unequal separator characters in use. You know, the old Windows problem with slashes and backslashes in directory paths. I've already created a patch to fix this issue.

After uninstalling Tools plugin you can still see GF runtimes and servers that were created during the life of plugin. The servers are not runable anymore because there is no server type (and thus no server delegate). The runtimes also can't be edited (Eclipse->Preferences->Server->Runtime env.). There is a question what is better:

  • Leave the servers and runtimes for user to deal with them (after installing tools plugin they will be working again).

or

  • Add some uninstall handler that will do the cleanup

Here is small guide how to add uninstall handler:

Admin Console opens in the Eclipse edit area. No problem yet.

[Do anything in admin console and ] Simply close admin console tab via click on X.

CRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The ENTIRE ECLIPSE IDE INSTANCE (with Glassfish, open Java editors, and anything else) DISSAPPEARS!! As if Eclipse wasn't started. (Except for a hanging Java instance in task manager.)

Nasty bug which can cause loss of coding changes in other tabs.

I tried it several times. Happens every time.

I have 3.1.1_b12, but likely affects other versions as well.

Does this happen if you use an external browser (not Eclipse)?

Comment by natg [ 05/Jan/12 ]

It does not happen with an external browser.

Comment by piotrik [ 06/Apr/12 ]

I have tried to reproduce this issue on very similar configuration - Windows 7 64 bit, JDK 1.6u30, Eclipse Indigo 3.7 SR2, newest GF plugins - without success.

@natq: Are you still experiencing the issue? If yes, what other (beside glassfish ones) plugins have you installed on Eclipse?

Comment by natg [ 16/Apr/12 ]

Yes. I still have this issue, even with GF 3.12 and Eclipse 3.7 SR2.
The only server installed is one instance of GF 3.12.

Comment by natg [ 03/May/12 ]

I just noticed that an error dump is generated every time it crashes.
Maybe the attached file will reveal the deal.
Thanks
nat

Comment by piotrik [ 21/Jul/12 ]

I am afraid that this is not issue of the plugin itself. It fails somewhere in the native code. Once I solved similar issue with replacing JVM Eclipse runs on from openJDK to oracle JDK (on linux). Maybe some update or use JVM from other vendor could help.

The problem comes when i close the terminated one: the debug process will vanish, but it's still there, i just can't use it anymore. The Resolution says "fixed" but the Fix Version is "none"? So what version is this fixed in?

The latest version obtained via "Download additional server adapters" seems to be 1.7.3.201106201340
The one obtained via the update site at http://download.java.net/glassfish/eclipse/helios is 1.7.3.201106220649

Neither one seems to fix the problem... in fact after uninstalling and reinstalling these, I can't even get any Glassfish configuation created anymore. It simply doesn't appear in the list when I right click in the Servers view and choose "New Server"

Comment by piotrik [ 04/May/12 ]

The fix is available from today. But we update update sites for Indigo and Juno only - http://download.java.net/glassfish/eclipse/indigo[juno]. You can try to update your helios from these sites but it is not tested. I would recommend upgrading to new Eclipse release.

Comment by jesmith17 [ 10/Aug/12 ]

This isn't fixed. I am running Eclipse Juno

Version: Juno Release
Build id: 20120614-1722
Glassfish 3.1.2
Mac OSX 10.7.4

Seeing the exact same situation. Just went through the update sites for Juno to make sure I had all the most recent patches, but still getting this error. This makes Eclipse unusable.

When I go through preferences -> servers, I can correctly add the Glassfish server there, as well as the JBoss server I also have installed. However, none of the launch configuration options wil alllow the "server" drop down box to work.

 Description

I cannot debug my webapp on glassfish from eclipse because every time I start the app in debug mode I get the message "Wrong user name or password.". Although glassfish runs fine, in eclipse it says [stopped] and debugging is not possible (and you have to manually kill glassfish).
In "normal" operation glassfish runs with no warnings/errors so I had no clue where that comes from.
Nevertheless I changed all passwords, reinstalled certificates, reinstalled eclipse and plugins, created a new server instance, created a new workspace a.s.o. Nothing helped, so I finally looked into the code, just to find out, that in SunAppServer.getV3ServerStatus() there is a hardcoded 30 seconds time limit after it returns a CREDENTIAL_ERROR! I checked it - and of course - after exact those 30 seconds the message pops up.

So please:

1.) Change the error message to sth that doesn't mislead the developer

2.) Increase the timeout - or better make it configurable.

thanks

Actually, I had the same issue and looking at the code and logs, it appears GlassFish is sending a "please wait" response to the plugin.
The plugin then consider the request as failed and throw an exception regarding credentials.

However, the "please wait" message is catched but not taken into account :

ServerCommand.readResponse():
if(message != null && message.contains("please wait"))

{ retry = true; }

else

{ serverMessage = null != message ? message.replaceAll("%%%EOL%%%", "\n") : ""; }

CommandRunner.call(): does not take care of serverCmd.retry()

Small patch attached.

I'm curently building a custom Eclipse distro for my team based on M2eclipse and GlassFish/OEPE.
I'll try to give as much info as I can on the issues I'll find

Happy to help on this one but my patch's just adding the test on serverCmd.retry() on the while loop.

In my case, this bug appeared this way:

  • Start GlassFish
  • Deploy an app (EAR) with numbers of libs (more than 50 MB, like GWT + Spring + Hibernate)
  • Stop the server
  • Restart the server
  • The server seems to be deploying all the apps at startup (which takes more than two minutes) before answering any _locations command, thus send a "please wait" response

 Description

Classpath entries set using the Eclipse Run Configuration Classpath tab do not appear to take effect when the run configuration (aka .launch file) is run. Specifically, we use the "Add Projects..." feature of the .launch configuration editor (Run Configuration) to add dependent projects from the same Eclipse workspace to the runtime classpath. This feature works for other app servers (i.e. JBoss) but not for Glassfish. The .launch files created by the Glassfish plugin have the classpath entries in the .launch file, but don't appear to make it to the runtime classpath of Glassfish.

Yes, configure the server is not done via Eclipse, but via the unified domain.xml or cli commands or admin gui in the server jvm options area.
On the JDK can be picked using std Eclipse UI.
Please use the admin facilities of the server to configure it.
Tying Eclipse ui features to the runtime configuration would be too much work and could potentially create a non working config on the backend

Comment by aolsen [ 17/May/11 ]

I guess this is why there is an option for "Internal GlassFish..." in Eclipse?

Brings me back to the question about what the distincstion between the various GF servers in Eclipse really are. Here is an obviuos example: The internal GF in Eclipse needs to allow for tampering in any way (or?).

Just my workspace...

 Description

Hello. I don't know whether this can be considered a duplicate of GLASSFISHPLUGINS-319, although it seems very similar. I have a Dynamic Web Project that includes another JPA Project in which I only define the database mappings (entities) and the persistence.xml definitions (this is because these are common to more than one project). Prior to Glassfish Eclipse plugin 1.6.1.201010180926 everything was fine, but since I updated Eclipse with this version of the plugin, every time I try to deploy the Dynamic Web Project, Eclipse complains that it doesn't find the first invoked entity of the JPA entity list. It seems as if the JAR file created by the plugin from the JPA Project is not in the classpath of the web application.

This happens with every embedded project as well. I have tried with a plain Java project being embedded in another, and the result is the same.

I would love to install GF3.1, but I downloaded both b30 and b31 versions, and I was unable to install it under Windows XP. The installer issues an error message saying "Invalid SwiXML Descriptor" and terminates immediately. I tried in three WinXP different computers, and it was the same. I could investigate the issue, but I'm really tired with this and I've lost a lot of time, so I prefer to install GF3.1 when it's ready and in the meantime develop under Tomcat or WASCE to be more productive.

Comment by ludo [ 13/Dec/10 ]

OK, I just posted a new plugin for you to test under the update center:

http://download.java.net/glassfish/eclipse/heliosdev

It should address all the issues related to dependant libraries.

Comment by galdunate [ 13/Dec/10 ]

As you may see, the new plugin only made things worse. Now it says "access denied", which is the symptom described by another user regarding this (or a similar) problem.

Comment by ludo [ 13/Dec/10 ]

Sorry to hear about that.
I think it is related to redeployment while the plugin changed.
Before, the plugin would deploy dependant libs as exploded dir. Now it uses a jar.
So the redeployment might fail...
Can you try one more thing? Either with Eclipse, or the Admin Console, can you try to undeploy this application? A fresh deploy would work I hope..

Comment by galdunate [ 13/Dec/10 ]

Yes you're right. After erasing the modules in glassfish/domains/domain1/eclipseApps by hand, I was able to load the application and make it work. Thanks a lot.

Comment by ludo [ 13/Dec/10 ]

Thanks for confirming. Very appreciated!!!

Not sure, but I'll try to see if I can detect this side effect state and delete the old deployed files...
Will see. Thanks again for the bugs and the testing.

Comment by galdunate [ 14/Dec/10 ]

Thank you. Anyway, it's not only necessary to undeploy the application in Eclipse or via the GlassFish console. You have to delete the corresponding web application directory in the eclipseApps subdirectory manually. Otherwise the problem continues to happen. Best regards, Guillermo

 Description

I'm tried to configure GlassFish server in Eclipse - something I did with many previous versions, but a regular procedure with adding GlassFish adapter is not available. GlassFish is not even in the list of servers.

Tried to install GlassFish Tool for Luna from Eclipse Marketplace. Eclipse log has a bunch of errors and there is no way to configure GlassFish in Eclipse Servers view. I asked another person to try installing tools - he has the same issues. Eclipse log has multiple exceptions similar to this one:

Tried Eclipse Kepler - GlassFish Tools for Kepler is broken too.

Comment by David Delabassee [ 02/Oct/14 ]

Yakov - we'll look at this after JavaOne.

Thanks for reporting this issue. We have fixed the "GlassFish Tools for Luna" entry on Eclipse Marketplace. Please try installing again. We did not reproduce any issues with "GlassFish Tools for Kepler".

In the future, you will get a more expedient response to questions regarding GlassFish Tools for Eclipse, but posting on the following forum:

The fix did not help. After installing GlassFish Tools I still can't configure GlassFish server. Eclipse reports Internal Error. The Eclipse error log has the following error:

This error is unrelated to GF Tools. Something else is going wrong with your Eclipse install. Please try installing GF Tools into a fresh Eclipse install.

Please specify how GF Tools is broken after a fresh install. This exception is also not related to GF Tools.

How did you install GF Tools? Did you go through Eclipse Marketplace and use "GlassFish Tools for Luna" entry? Did you see two features when you went through the wizard (GF Tools and Oracle Java EE Tools)? Both need to be installed.

Comment by yfain [ 02/Oct/14 ]

Thanks, after selecting Oracle Tools for Java EE GlassFish configuration went through fine. You can close this issue.

Installed GF 4.0. Tried to configure to run inside Eclipse Kepler IDE with JDK 8. The Eclipse window for configuring GF Runtime does not enable the button Next if JDK 8 is selected. Works fine with JDK 7.

Not sure if this is GF or Eclipse bug though.

This is a "feature" and not a bug, although I understand if you see otherwise JDK 8 is not a certified runtime for GlassFish 4.0. GlassFish 4.0.1 is planning to add JDK 8 certification. Working with the Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse team on updating the plugin for GlassFish 4.0.1. Closing this issue.

 Description

I've installed the GlassFish Server Adapter Tools on Eclipse JEE Juno as well as the GlassFish Application Server Open Source Edition version 3.1.2, now whenever i open the GlassFish Admin Console from within Eclipse's Internal Browser then try to close that tab, Eclipse immediatly shuts down and creates an error log file in my Eclipse home folder. (I've attached the .log file with this issue)

I've noticed that this problem only occurs when i close the tab of the Admin Console after i've logged in. If i just Open the Admin Console inside Eclipse but do not login and close the tab, nothing wrong happens.

I've also been able to reproduce the same weird behaviour on Eclipse JEE Indigo. Notice that if i switch the Web Browser preference to [Default Internet Browser or any other browser] this problem doesn't happen as i can close those browser pages without any worries.

p.s: i tried with different versions of the jdk : 1.6 u 26 and u33 as well as jdk 1.7 u 5 (all jdks and jres are 32 bits versions)

 Description

A Java EE compliant application server should not expose its internal modules to the applications.

We are using the Eclipse Moxy 2.3.2 in our application that is deployed to a Glassfish 3.1 instance. Moxy 2.3.2 depends on the org.eclipse.persistence.core 2.3.2 artifact. Furthermore, GF 3.1 also contains an org.eclipse.persistence.core(with version 2.2.0) artifact as an osgi bundle in the as-install/glassfish/modules directory. The problem is that the Glassfish/osgi framework exposes the classes to our application from the osgi bundle in the glassfish's modules dir.

Please consider enhancing the IDE plugin to allow viewing of MQ Broker Log. For some types of setup, this is crucial to understanding and diagnosing messaging issues.

This will be easy to do for local instances... Is there a way to get the content of the log from MQ if it is on a remote system?

Comment by vince kraemer [ 02/May/11 ]

proposed resolution:

add an action to the server instance's right-click menu, "View MQ Log".

The action is enabled for local 'instances' of MQ. It is disabled otherwise.

When the user selects the item, the log file is opened and displayed. The view will be live, so addition data that gets added to the log will be reflected.

The MQ log WILL NOT open when the user starts the server or deploys an app, which is different from the way the IDE interacts with the app server's server.log
