 Description

First, to set some basic expectations - we do not currently have full localization support on the site, so while the content will be entirely in your languages, the headers, footers, and links back to the main site will remain in English (as all the content they are pointing to is in English anyway).

If you haven't already, please take a look at the FX and Embedded pages for ideas about what we can do with the spaces - http://community.java.net/community/javafx and http://community.java.net/community/embedded.

What Frank will be looking for from you to start with is a list of twitter handles, tags, and blogs to follow so we can automate delivery of new content. He'll also help you set up custom spaces where you can add news and community information to the page, and you can choose how much or how little you want to update.

I'd also like to do an official proposal to the Java.net Community Leaders to establish these as official language-based communities on the site. At this point it's really a formality, but I think it's a good thing to do. If any of you object, please let me know. I promise this official designation does not require any more work from you! We have a mailing list that is fairly low traffic and we host a telephone meeting every other week or so for community news that I try to keep short. The meeting is not mandatory and when I can I try to record them and release them as an mp3 to the leads so they can catch up on their own time.

Finally, if you have ideas for other people in your language area that you would like to invite to be involved, please do so. I'd love to see as much cross-cultural participation within these language groups as possible.

Thank you all for your time and ideas!

The current Community Pages primarily aggregate content from other sources (blog feeds, twitter, you tube, etc.), but do have "blocks" for content to be manually entered.

The template for these pages is attached and includes the following sections/blocks:

A1. Community Resources. Block to add any links to resources.
Manual Edit through HTML edit (edit link under block)
A2. Community Leaders. Block to list the community leaders.
Manual Edit through HTML edit (edit link under block)

B1. Key Projects. Block to list all public key projects on Kenai that have been noted as key projects.
Auto, but some manual effort needed to flag a Kenai project in the community as a "Top" project (done by the community leaders for English site)
B2. Newest Projects. Block to list the latest community projects from Kenai.
Auto, but some manual effort needed to flag a Kenai project in your community (done by the community leaders for English site)
B3. Forum Topics. Block to list the latest forum topics.
Auto, site admin will create the reference to the forum if it exists

C1. Community Overview. Block for manual entry of an introduction to the community.
Manual edit through HTML edit (edit tab on top of page)
C2. Community News & Announcements. Block for manual entry of news and announcements.
Manual edit through CMS add/manage link in left column under "Community Leader Tools"
C3. RSS Feeds. Block for all community RSS feeds that have been identified.
Auto, site admin sets up the feeds that you have identified
C4. Community Tweets. Block for all twitter hashtags or handles that have been identified.
Auto, site admin sets up the twitter handles.hashtags you have identified
C5. Community Videos. Block for manual entry of videos.
Manual edit through CMS add/manage link in left column under "Community Leader Tools"

As Sonya stated the first step is for you to send me the information for the feeds and tweets and anything else we can pull in via feeds (C3 and C4) and the translation of the community page that exists now (C1). I'll also need your java.net ID so we can give you the appropriate permissions on your Community Page.

We can customize the template to fit your community localization needs and move around blocks, highlight them, delete them or add new blocks.

Please contact me, Frank, with any questions regarding the template.

STEP #1. Start with is a list of twitter handles (C4), RSS Blog Feeds (C3) to follow so we can automate delivery of new content. Also, need Community Overview (C1), Community Resource Links (A1) and a list of Commuity Leaders (A2) to get started.

Hi, German www.ijug.eu would love to help doing this.
We're in the middle of getting everything together for a first launch.
I'll add information as soon as we have them. Aiming at 10/18/13 at the moment.

Cheers,
-m

 Description

Clicking "Add another choice" on the Editor's "Create Poll" screen causes all of the poll options to disappear. Because of this, polls can currently be created using only the two option boxes that are displayed by default (image to be emailed).

This issue was first noticed on May 24, when a new poll was posted. The "Create Poll" page worked without problem when prior polls were created.

The next new poll is scheduled to be posted on June 7.

 Description

Selecting an item, then selecting an operation (for example, "Promote to home page" or "Demote from home page"), then clicking "Execute" produces error messages similar to those in the attached image. Sometimes an error message happens immediately after "Execute" is clicked; but usually the error occurs after "Confirm" is clicked on the screen that follows the "Execute" click.

A workaround is available, using the Edit screens for each individual item. However, the promoting and demoting using the HomePage Manage page saves time.

This problem was first noticed around May 24.

Can't attach the image, so I'll email it. A typical error message is:

No row selected. Please select one or more rows.
No operation selected. Please select an operation to perform.

Comment by fnikola [ 07/Jun/13 10:14 PM ]

Updated form caching on the site and should be able to manage the home page items in bulk again.

 Description

From KENAI-4038

In the upper right hand corner just under 'Create Account' and 'Login' or 'Welcome, [username]' and Logout there is a search field.
Check the 'Projects' checkbox (which behaves like a radio button)
Type any public project listed in the list such as 'bouncescore' and hit the search icon.
Note: Sometimes you have to check more than once before you see it.

Behavior: A warning pops up: "Although this page is encrypted, the information you have entered is to be sent over an unencrypted connection and could easily be read by a third party. Are you sure you want to continue sending this information?"

The following html was found -> <form action="http://www.java.net/search/node" method="post" id="search-theme-form">

It was suspected the warning is appearing because that should be a httpS as opposed to http.

 Description

In migrating projects from opensolaris.org we are losing a place to perform code reviews. Previously, we had cr.opensolaris.org where we could post webrevs (a bundle of html documents that displayed diffs of the change(s) in question). Originally it was a simple interface – rsync or scp/sftp a directory of files into a per-user directory. When the core kernel code became closed-source again and people were found accidentally posting reviews to the external site, it became mandatory to go through a web interface, uploading a zip file.

The rsync interface was really nice, and it would be nice to have that option again. The web front-end was essentially non-existent, except for a page of instructions. That would make implementing it trivial. A fuller management interface might be nice if it were implemented nicely – perhaps even a place to stick a reviewboard interface – but that's less critical.

Upon fixing KENAI-3747 I discovered I can close the browser completely and then navigate to java.net and still see Welcome [user] before logging in. If I click the link for the user I am redirected to the login page.

The team is suspecting this is an issue on Cognisync's side.

The test case is as follows on Chrome:
1. Sign in to java.net with your user id
2. Exit the browser completely(all tabs), without logging out of java.net
3. Start Chrome
4. navigate to the java.net site
5. Still shows your previous user id as logged in
6. Click on your user id or a link that requires authentication
7. Takes you back to the login screen

Expected: Either you stay really logged in or we don't give the impression that you are still logged in when you are not

This feature is requested for the JavaFX Community and Java Ambassadors sites, but I think would apply to other sites. The entries in the News and Announcement section are not delineated as well as they could be, and they don't display the optional image on the front page. It would be nice to show the optional image on an announcement on the front page, and it would also be nice for the announcements to be better delineated so that they are more readable.

"Adopt-a-JSR and Adopt-OpenJDK are intended to encourage JUG members to get involved in a Java Specification Requests (JSR) and the OpenJDK project. JSRs cover all aspects of the Java ecosystem such as the new Date and Time API coming into Java 8, the latest JavaEE 7 APIs for the cloud and much more! Notes from email

All nominees must be sponsored by a current active Java Champion. <- sent to champion-selection-committee@java-champions.java.net

1. We thus need a field on the first page for the Java Champion sponsor. If they don't have one, they must find one. They can leave that field blank, in which case we might still consider him, but we will be more circumspect.

2. We also need fields that they can fill in for the nomination, with links to their achievements and biography, based on the "Who is a good candidate?"

Here are some of the guidelines for selecting new champions (one or several principles may apply):
Java Champions are leaders; ideal candidates are leading Java-related projects, JUG communities, and so on.
Java Champions are technical luminaries; the candidate should be a Java engineer or architect who is relatively senior and has lots of experience.
Java Champions are independent-minded and credible; Java Champions may author or publish content that is pro, neutral, or negative toward Oracle.
Java Champions are involved with some really cool applications of Java Technology or some humanitarian or educational effort. The application must be openly available to the Java community (vs. a company-proprietary or government-classified project).
Java Champions are able to evangelize or influence other developers through their own professional activities (via consulting, teaching, writing, speaking, etc.)

3. Once they are submitted, we need to send a confirmation email to the person who submitted it. The program should then select 5 random JCs on the selection committee list (see mail-list champion-selection-committee) and should allow them to vote: Yes, No, Undecided. There should also be a comment field. The program should prompt the selection committee if no vote comes in within a week. Also, if someone is Undecided, then perhaps the program can appoint another random person to evaluate the submission. In order to keep everything in the open, the program should send emails to the champion-selection-committee list whenever an event occurs, for example:

3.1 New candidate submitted
3.2 Kirk voted YES
3.3 Mattias voted NO - "This guy came to JFokus and spoke on atomics but he had absolutely no clue and was an embarrassment to my conference."
3.4 Heinz voted YES - "He has written the JCoolStuffWidgets framework that is in use with a lot of my clients."

etc.

Obviously we could discuss the various concerns on the mailing list if it is not a slam-dunk submission and we should be allowed to change our vote. Once we have consensus, meaning that we don't have any NOs, but we can have Undecideds, then the system can send an email to the person inviting them to accept the nomination.

If no consensus is reached then the nomination is set aside for at least 3 months. A re-evaluation will be made if anyone wishes to re-open the case after the 3 month period. If no consensus is reached in the re-evaluation then the nomination is shelved. A new committee will be formed for each nomination.

All documented here:

Adding permissions so that any Ambassador Leader can update the community top panel and update each others news items (see Adopt-a-JSR task).

Those permissions have been completed.

Comment by site_support [ 08/Mar/13 09:59 PM ]

I see the following message on the issue - I cannot close it.

"You don't have permission to work on this issue."

Perhaps a fallout of the new status for resolution.

Several projects maintain visible sites on java.net and github or bitbucket to help improve their visibility.

It would be nice to have the ability to link any commits that occur on github/bitbucket with the JIRA tracking on java.net.

Closing this as a duplicate, filed bug directly with Kenai engineering: http://kenai.com/jira/browse/KENAI-3912

Comment by sonyabarry [ 18/Dec/12 08:35 PM ]

Relaying a note from engineering - this is blocked by the fact that our current JIRA implementation is too old to support it. We will be upgrading all of our forge tools in 2013 and this will be addressed when we're on a version of JIRA that can handle it.

 Description

Kenai.com is supposed to be superseded by the new Java.net infrastructure. Months ago, some comments were made about plans to provide tools to ease migration from Kenai.com to Java.net, but no other news have happened since then. There is some uncertainty about this, so it would be nice that a post were published in both Kenai.com and Java.net making clear these points:

1) Is there any schedule to shutdown Kenai.com?

2) Is Kenai.com still receiving maintenance and/or operators time?

3) Is there any plan to migrate Kenai.com projects, especially the contents other than in SCM repositories (like wikis, blogs, forums, etc.)?

4) If the answer to 3) is No or there is no schedule for it, are there any hints to manually migrate the projects from Kenai.com to Java.net?

In my case, I have a project in Kenai.com that currently uses just a Mercurial repo and the downloads section, but now I need to set up a wiki for docs. As migrating the wiki would be a manual task and I could have difficulties keeping track of the images to be migrated, I'd rather know if it is better to migrate to Jave.net or stay at Kenai.com.

 Comments
Comment by RickieES [ 08/Oct/12 10:49 PM ]

Just after creating this issue I have found this thread in Java.net forums:

http://www.java.net/forum/topic/site-help/migrating-project-kenaicom-javanet

I guess it answers some of the points outlined in the description:

1) No schedule yet. It seems that Keani.com will be alive at least until 2014.

2) IIUC, yes, its stack is receiving updated at the same time Java.net does.

3) Not yet, and people won't be able to start seriously looking at it before, probably, 2014.

4) No hints for manual migration. Owners of projects based at Kenai.com are welcomed to migrate the content themselves to Java.net (or even to keep the sister projects in sync both in Kenai.com and Java.net)

Still, I feel (and other participants in them mentioned forum thread too) that a post in Kenai.com with this information is much desired. Probably just copying and pasting the questions and answers in this issue with a "Q & A regarding Kenai.com migration to Java.net" title would be enough.

I will be looking at this "access denied" issue for http://www.java.net/blog/fabriziogiudici to resolve it.

Hi Frank. I can't remember the link, it wasn't on my pages neither at Java.Net, I only recall I clicked on some site this morning. But for me it's not a problem - the important thing that there's a working link. I'm going to use some of my blog posts in a presentation in the next days.

The current design of these indicators is linked to each user. Therefore, each post that has not been seen by a logged on user is flagged as new (green) and after the user sees it it will be marked as not new (gray). When not logged in the site treats the user as anonymous and it cannot determine if the post has been seen by the user and displays gray icon.

Perhaps we could keep the existing logic for logged on users and update the logic for anonymous users so that any post within a predetermined amount of time (1 day?) will be flagged as new (green).

Comment by Hildeberto Mendonça [ 26/Jul/12 09:05 AM ]

The problem continues and it is getting worse. We are losing members because of this. I think the solution for this problem is related to the send scheme "restricted to local domain and subscribers". It is just about creating a new schema "restricted to subscribers only", which would block emails from the local domain, that people may use to send spam to the list.

Please copy and paste the message source for the phishing email. In Thunderbird you can do this with Ctrl+U or View-->Message Source from the menu.

Closing because we don't have a way to fix this issue at this time. We will be replacing the MLM at some time in the near future, and can't spare the engineering resources for something that will be replaced soon. Temporary resolution is to switch list to moderated.

 Description

When you try to create a new forum post, the text entry field for the body of the post appears to extend to the right hand side of the browser window, which places part of it beneath the "Formatting Help" sidebar on the right side, obscuring part of the editor. I'm attaching a screenshot.

Comment by fnikola [ 30/May/12 06:34 PM ]

hi. we are looking into the issue now. it seems that this only happens when the size of the window is smaller. have you noticed that you can see the entire text area if you expand your screen? also, can you tell me your screen size/resolution. thanks.

Comment by tizzo [ 30/May/12 06:56 PM ]

Hi. My screen resolution is 1024x768 and I observe this problem with my browser maximized. If I adjust my screen resolution to 1280x1024 and maximize, I can see the entire Body box - but that's a little hard on the eyes. So I think you're right, the problem is with making an unwarranted assumption about the screen size. Thanks.

Comment by fnikola [ 30/May/12 07:12 PM ]

Ok, yes, I have conformed this behavior and will look at making the text area compatible with a 1024x768 resolution. Thanks for your reply!

Have you been able to post a forum topic since? This may have been related to the anti spam software the site is using.

This was an issue with the pre-Kenai processing. When we were using CollabNet we were trying to keep the user profile updated on both systems and there must have been some issues. Now we are setting the user email address to <username>@java.net for all new users and never cahnging it so all emails should be sent to that alias which should forward to the correct email address that is stored in Kenai.

Comment by fnikola [ 24/May/12 03:26 PM ]

There could be some more issues that exist and we can update the email address on a case by case basis.

Comment by fnikola [ 24/May/12 03:37 PM ]

Updated Tom's email address to <username>@java.net (uijltje@java.net)

 Description

The comments are indented. After a lengthy discussion, they get shoved so far to the right that they become hard to read. The text part gets too narrow. It helps a little to maximize the window, but only up to a point. (And not everyone has a neat super-wide hi-res screen).

Furthermore, the indentation steals and wastes increasingly large amounts of precious screen real etate. And please note that e.g. logs and code examples are best viewed when lines are not broken too much.

This is an unecessary and most irritating feature. Please remove it.

hope oracle can help . I email with SOnya to the team, about this. but I think a new issue here will be better.

Just to clarify, most of the wiki pages I'm interested in are not actually in subdirs of Mobileandembedded/PhoneMEAdvanced. Instead they just extend the name. For example, http://wiki.java.net/twiki/bin/view/Mobileandembedded/PhoneMEAdvancedCVMSH is a page I want included in this export request. It is a child page of Mobileandembedded/PhoneMEAdvanced, and is shown to have a hierarchy of java.net > Wiki > Mobileandembedded > PhoneMEAdvanced > PhoneMEAdvancedCVMSH, but as you can see the URL path to this page only specifies Mobileandembedded/PhoneMEAdvancedCVMSH. I would like all child pages of Mobileandembedded/PhoneMEAdvanced to be archived, and any page that matches the pattern Mobileandembedded/PhoneMEAdvanced*

We also have the same problem with Toronto JUG (http://tjug.ca/). We do show up on the map, but not in the search.

Comment by kons [ 13/Mar/12 12:06 PM ]

Please update the index for the group 'victorianjug'
http://java.net/projects/victorianjug
The project description was recently updated to include more words that better describe the location.

Currently reflected in the search as 'The Victorian Chapter of the Australian Java User Group.' The describing text under that search result needs updating to match the new victorianjug description.
It points to http://www.java.net/project/victorian-chapter-australian-java-user-group which then redirects to victorianjug.

Acceptance Criteria
Should be able to use JUG search for 'Melbourne', 'Victoria', 'Australia' - and this shows up a link to the victorianjug - including updated description.

Updated the search index for victorianjug and the search results description updates were propagated from the project description changes.

Comment by fnikola [ 13/Mar/12 05:55 PM ]

The Toronto JG seach index updates were completed a while ago and never noted here.

Comment by sonyabarry [ 11/Oct/12 03:48 PM ]

It looks like the Toronto stuff still isn't working properly. Frank, can you get in touch with jfuerth to confirm what needs to be done?

Comment by fnikola [ 17/Oct/12 04:56 AM ]

The reason the JUGS search is not working for Toronto JUG is that there is no project on java.net for them. The search needs a project node in order to find the project.

The search index that was added earlier was added erroneously and linked to an event for the Toronto JUG.

Once the project has been added and associated with the JUGS Community it will be found in the search.

Comment by fnikola [ 19/Oct/12 06:25 AM ]

In order for the JUGs to show in the search results a project must be created. Once the project is created we can make it public and assign it to the JUGs "community". Then the JUG will be found in the search.

Comment by dfraser [ 06/Dec/12 07:50 PM ]

I have created the toronto-jug Java.net project. I added jfuerth as an administrator. Could you please add it to the JUG community?

FWIW I am the co-founder of the Toronto JUG.

Thanks,

Dan

Comment by fnikola [ 06/Dec/12 09:10 PM ]

Hi Dan,

I have made your project public and moved it under the JUGS Community project and it now displays both on the map and in the search!

Changes agreed upon to remove "general" as project association choice:

1. remove "general" as a value
2. remove "general" from hard-coded list of communities on project tab
3. enable CLs to filter only un-associated projects, via an exposed filter on the existing "associate projects" menu item, or a header link, or another menu item.

Additional related enhancement:

4. on project tab, remove "incubating projects" sub-tab, replace it with "newest projects". Move that tab to be second tab from the left.

Tags: kml
Participants: fnikola and van_riper

 Description

Google Earth is unable to resolve the current relative network links in jug-leaders.kml file. If you prepend the current relative values with "http://www.java.net/kml/", then the file can be loaded into applications like Google Earth with the network links properly resolving to their location on the internet. This will have no impact on the current usage in web applications. Whether fully specified or relatively specified as they are today, they will resolve properly in web applications.

The actual code change will take one minute, but, I gave it an hour estimate to allow for sanity testing of the change and properly committing it in whatever system you are using to manage the sources and deploy changes.

these projects have both the project url and linked project url filled out. i have re-enabled these fields so you can see them and can just remove one of them (i.e. http://www.cafeh.com.br) in order to delete the project.

i removed the linked project url (http://hccweb1.bai.ne.jp/~hcj64001/umjammer/text/d0026.html) for xed and deleted it too.

Have tested on many configurations including Kubuntu 11.10 + Firefox 7.0.1 and have not seen this issue. Are you still seeing the issue?

Comment by sonyabarry [ 04/Nov/11 10:43 PM ]

Notes from original reporter:

I've tried the following scenarios:

  • disabled all firefox addons: Login menu is visible
  • enabled only Adblock Plus 1.3.0 with EasyList subscription: Login menu is visible
  • add Fanboy's List (English) subscription to Adblock Plus: Login menu is gone
  • remove Fanboy's List (English) subscription from Adblock Plus: Login menu is visible

So it seems to be adblock filtering messing up.
Maybe good to see what exact filter in the "Fanboys List (English)" is messing up, and if it's a generic one, then you could change the menu code to be not-like-ads

I've tested the same scenario on a Windows 7 with Firefox 7.0.1 with the same results.

Comment by sonyabarry [ 04/Nov/11 10:44 PM ]

I'm lowering the priority, but it would be good to look into this. Adblock Plus is widely used.

Comment by fnikola [ 08/Nov/11 05:18 PM ]

renamed CSS div element so AdBlocker does not see it is as an ad.

Here are both the original text files and the files after going through the twiki2mediawiki conversion script.

Comment by fnikola [ 28/Oct/11 07:31 PM ]

my recommendation is to update this information and then place it on the CMS in the JUGS section.

 Description

It seems for historic reasons I am still registered with one or several mailing lists of the JAXB projects using the mailing address karg@quipsy.de or markus.karg@quipsy.de. Since the migration to Kenai my email address is markus@headcrashing.eu, so I cannot unsubscribe those other adressesn manually (or I do not see the way how to do that).

I want to ask kindly if you can unsubscribe karg@quipsy.de and markus.karg@quipsy.de from all JAXB mailing lists.

Thanks
Markus

Both mailing addresses were subscribed to the users list and have been removed. Searching the rest of the jaxb lists for string "karg" in subscribers didn't turn up anything.

 Description

The latest release of net.java.dev.webdav/jaxrs is 1.1.1 in the "old" java.net Maven Repository, but you forwarded 1.1 to the Maven Central Repository. Why? Obviously on Maven Central there should be the latest bug fix, not some older and more buggy release. What to do now to fix this ASAP?

 Comments
Comment by Brian Fox [ 07/Sep/11 11:46 AM ]

The entire Maven1 and Maven2 repos were migrated. The artifacts in Central at:
http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/net/java/dev/webdav/jaxrs/

came from:

http://download.java.net/maven/2/net/java/dev/webdav/jaxrs/

you can see that there was 1.1 and 1.2-SNAPSHOT. Snapshots are not allowed in Central so it wasn't migrated. There is no 1.1.1 in the repository, so this is why it's not in Central.

To get newer versions updated, you need to deploy them now to https://maven.java.net. See http://java.net/projects/maven2-repository/pages/MigrationAndCleanupRelatedDocumentation for more information.

Comment by sonyabarry [ 04/Nov/11 01:36 PM ]

mkarg - OK to close this now?

Comment by mkarg [ 04/Nov/11 06:11 PM ]

No, it is not ok to close this case, as there IS a 1.1.1. See here:

http://download.java.net/maven/2/net/java/dev/webdav/webdav-jaxrs/

Comment by juven [ 07/Nov/11 07:21 AM ]

mkarg,

I think you should look at http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/net/java/dev/webdav/webdav-jaxrs/ instead of http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/net/java/dev/webdav/jaxrs/

You misunderstood the problem. The 1.1.1 was release under that URL, independent whether that is the right or wrong path. So you should migrate the 1.1.1 to the new repo now. That is the intention of this case.

Comment by juven [ 08/Nov/11 06:10 PM ]

the pom http://download.java.net/maven/2/net/java/dev/webdav/webdav-jaxrs/1.1.1/webdav-jaxrs-1.1.1.pom has

groupId: net.java.dev.webdav
artifactId: webdav-jaxrs
version: 1.1.1

these implies path: /net/java/dev/webdav/webdav-jaxrs/1.1.1

so I don't see the intention to http://repo1.maven.org/maven2/net/java/dev/webdav/jaxrs/

the validation errors were due to an issue with on of the servers not handling the cookie sessions correctly. the internal server error was due to resource issue that have been resolved.

Comment by sonyabarry [ 15/May/12 01:02 PM ]

Users are seeing this error again, via feedback:

I failed to post a reply at http://www.java.net/comment/reply/706287/803814
"Validation error, please try again. If this error persists, please contact the site administrator." – repeatedly.

Comment by fnikola [ 15/May/12 01:49 PM ]

Waiting to hear back from the user that experienced this last occurrence.

Usually this error happens when the session cookie is lost and they can be lost for a few reasons such as timing out, clearing them from your browser, refresh of certain caches on the system and etc.

Until we can verify that this is happening to a few users it can be attributed to the reasons above and will surface from time to time when the session cookie is lost. I have experienced it every once in a while when I have let me session idle for a long period of time and then tried to commit a change.

Comment by fnikola [ 15/May/12 06:42 PM ]

Please close this issue since it will happen from time to time with session cookies being lost between the two systems. Also, the submitter states "I have not encountered the particular problem before".

Bounce rate in list commits@fi.java.net is 50.

You should delete bouncing subscribers :

But the link at the bottom doesn't work, so I can do nothing about that.

Thanks.

The problem is that this is an unimplemented part of SYMPA. The decision was made not to finish this out because we will be replacing SYMPA entirely within the next few months.

In most cases these emails are sent out from lists that had a lot of former Sun employees subscribed. You can safely ignore these emails until we replace SYMPA, or if you'd like to spend a few minutes deleting dead @sun.com emails from your subscriber list, the notification should stop coming.

Malcolm Davis, one of our bloggers, would like to know if there is a way to find out statistics related to blog posts.

A long time ago, the authors of blogs saw a field at the bottom of each blog post listing how many times that page had been viewed. Malcolm may be remembering this, since he's been a java.net blogger for a long time.

Comment by fnikola [ 05/Aug/11 04:59 PM ]

Given that this is a long-time blogger, my guess is that a page hit counter would suffice (since that's what O'Reilly's movabletype platform provided). Sounds like Malcolm wants to know which particular blog posts attract the greatest readership.

If it's not too difficult, providing that might be beneficial – might entice bloggers to blog a bit more.

Kevin

Comment by fnikola [ 05/Aug/11 05:00 PM ]

Drupal does have a statistic module, but we do not have it active due to the associated overhead and existing SiteCatalyst analytics reporting already on the site. Our options will depend on the type of statistics requested - do they just want a page hit counter for their blog?

Comment by fnikola [ 05/Aug/11 05:01 PM ]

Added page hit counter to bottom links line for both blog posts and articles.

Hi Sonya,

At one of our infrastructure meetings, Frank and Andrew said a change was made to the articles back in the O'Reilly days such that the link to post comments doesn't show up. This was copied over into Drupal. So, I think Frank has to make a Drupal code/view change in order for people to be able to post comments.

If I will have the ability to close comments or keep them open, then I could close comments for all old articles, and keep them open for current articles for a year or so, then close them.

See the list here: http://home.java.net/projectsearch

Unpublished appears in the description for DBTester. Go to the node, it is published.

After playing around it looks like the workflow status (published, incubating, whatever) is updated if the community changes, but if it stays in general, it is not updated in the community column.

the community column for general projects appears to always have (unpublished)general. Looks like it may be a labeling thing having nothing to do with workflow?

Comment by sonyabarry [ 04/Nov/11 10:37 PM ]

I thought I wrote this up - in updating community affiliations this week I discovered that the unpublished tag appears in both the general community and JUGs projects in the list. It disappears if assigned to NetBeans or Desktop, for example.

Comment by fnikola [ 14/Nov/11 11:13 PM ]

The "(Unpublished)" before the "General" community label was actually displaying the published status of the General Community. Since this community is not published and merely a holding place for communities before being moved into their true community this should not display.

I have made changes to display the actual node workflow state and the community.

Blog Comments are rendered weird! Look at the comments in this blog entry for example:

http://weblogs.java.net/blog/cayhorstmann/archive/2011/07/29/java-7-unsafe-any-speed

The title of each comment is starting with <p>, and [quote] is not rendered but effectively printed as code on the screen! This totally screws the presentation!

Comment by fnikola [ 05/Aug/11 09:20 PM ]

Updated to strip out HTML and BBcode tags from the subject when automatically setting it from the actual comment that is entered.

The <p> tags (or any other HTML tags) will no longer be displayed in the comment subject.

Comment by mkarg [ 06/Aug/11 07:04 AM ]

Looking at the above sample URL I noticed that your fix seems to not correct already entered comments, which is a bit poor, as there are lots of comments screwed already. It would be great if you could runs some SQL against the comments database to fix that.

Also please note that it is not just HTML that screws the headers but also the WIKI syntax.

Comment by fnikola [ 19/Oct/12 06:40 AM ]

The JUG exists and can be found searching for "Java User Group Augsburg", but "jugaugsburg" was not in the project description and therefore, not a keyword. Added "jugaugsburg" to the project billboard field so it becomes a keyword for searching.

If a term or phrase is desired to retrieve the JUG then it must be in the description of the proejct - or added to the billboard field on the project. Also, the JUG project must be associated to the JUGS and selected as the JUGS Community.

Comment by fnikola [ 19/Oct/12 06:41 AM ]

This search box uses Kenai search. However, the search is working if you search for the project title "Simple Tray Notify" rather than its project name "simpletraynotify" so I think the search is working as designed.

Comment by sonyabarry [ 14/Jul/11 10:59 PM ]

disagree - if search is working as designed then there's a bug in the design - a lot of projects are referred to by their URL name - we should be able to find them that way too. I'll file a bug in Kenai.

In mathematics (and all other sciences) an arrow indicates in which directions values will rise:

A ---> Z

1 ---> 9

etc.

When clicking on a column header of the issues view, an arrows indicates the current sorting direction – but it is pointing in the wrong direction, actually:

A <--- Z

9 <--- 1

While I can understand why it was programmed that way ("ascending" seems to imply something like "up", "descending" seems to imply something like "down") it feels just wrong the the end user – and at actually IS wrong actually as "up" in the technical sense is always at the BOTTOM of a table!

Please change the GUI to not reflect technical words but the real world: "ascending" returns A and 1 at the top, Z and 9 at the bttom, so the arrow obviously must poing DOWN.

from Kevin...

I've been thinking for a while that it might be better to have 3 Spotlights on the home page. There is room for three, and it seems like I often cycle through the news I put into the Spotlights faster than is ideal – that is, I end up taking down Spotlights I wish could be there longer, but there's something new that seems important to put on the home page.

What do you think about the idea of having 3 Spotlights instead of 2?

from Andrew...

Sonya just fyi, this .dev is hard-coded into the view, its NOT part of the Drupal node. In fact Drupal doesn't store the project URL, just its name. When we need the URL we create it based on the project name and path. This particular view was created on the fly by Brett to help us see ALL projects, if you recall. I remember asking him to hard-code a link to the CEE projects so we could easily get to them from the view, versus going into the Drupal node then to it. With the Kenai integration we don't need this column, the first column goes directly to the Kenai project and the last column goes to the Drupal node.

So I recommend that Frank just remove this column from this view.

 Description

The "My Questions" view's left most column (the one without a header, showing coloured circles) seems to have the function to indicate whether there is new content. In fact, some of the circles are gray and others are green. I suspect that green means "New Information, Look at this one!". Unfortunately, the colours never change, independent whether I look at that or not. It seems it just does never reset the status of the questions.

 Comments
Comment by fnikola [ 12/Jul/11 04:24 AM ]

that column is misleading in this view because content is not flagged as new to yourself (since you just added/updated the content - it is not new to you). new content is only flagged for content that is created by other users. we either remove this column or add processing to indicate new posts within the last x amount of days instead of new content that you have not viewed.

however, if another users comments on that forum topic your question will be flagged as new.

 Description

From Markus via email:

I'd like to propose an improvement to the new java.net forums subsystem:

It would be good if there would be a "DELETE" button besides each own posting (particularly in the "My Posts" view).

Justification: Sometimes it happens that dumb people like me press the "Send" button twice since the browser is not reacting anymore (e. g. the Sun servers react too slow, or the browser hung up), so double postings happen. To remove the duplicate, the delete button would be nice.

I understand that this is problematic due to the synchronization with the MailingLists, but at least for the browser based UI it would be smart.

--notes from Sonya

This is one of those things that could be abused, but I think is worth trying given the amount of double posts I see. If it is abused (i.e. people going back and deleting old posts to make the threads nonsensical) we could modify it.

Idea - would it be possible to give them a time frame, say a 12 hour window to delete?

 Comments
Comment by mkarg [ 06/Jul/11 06:16 AM ]

I do not see why anybody should misuse it, but a 12 hours window would be ok.

Another idea could be that the system checks for duplicates automatically and discards the duplicates.

BTW, for COMMENTs a DELETE button is already in place, so the question is, why nobody fears a misuse THERE.

Comment by fnikola [ 12/Jul/11 03:54 AM ]

the timeframe requirement (delete within 12 hours of post) will take some time to customize, but we can add the ability for a user to delete their own post without too much customization. note that deleting a forum post will delete all of its comments too.

Comment by sonyabarry [ 12/Jul/11 01:11 PM ]

Go ahead and add the delete button, but skip the time limit for now. If it is abused in some way we can add the time limit later.

the ability for users to delete their own posts has been implemented.

The best way to do this would be to add a website feature to Meruvian, and then redirect that page to the forums.

You can do websites two different ways, one using the site CSS and templates, and the other using your own CSS and design (see GlassFish.java.net for an example).

Sorry to post with very high priority, but I'm unable to push a Mercurial repository.

It's android-src for the project http://java.net/projects/bluebill/

First, a couple of tries to push failed for a network error (I presume). Then three tries gave:

HTTP Error 500: abandoned transaction found - run hg recover

Now I tried to delete and re-create it, but I get this error in the feature management webpage:

1 error prohibited this feature from being saved
There were problems with the following fields:

Failed to create repository: HTTP status code 409

  • - Indicates a required field

Please help me in recreating and populating it. Thanks.

I was able to work around it - you can decrease the priority.

Comment by fabriziogiudici [ 02/Jun/11 04:01 PM ]

The error 409 seems to be intermittent. I deleted and recreated the repo multiple times before being able to push all the data, and usually error 409 appears if I try to recreate the repo (with the same name) immediately after having deleted it. Retrying after some minutes worked (or maybe you fixed that problem in the meantime?).

Basically, it seems that it can't handle a large number of changesets in a single push (or perhaps it's a timeout problem). I was able to push the repo by splitting it in chunks and doing partial pushes. I'm sharing the details in case they can be useful to others.

I first used this script to prepare the chunks:

#!/bin/sh

set -e
set -x

for i in 250 500 750 1000 1250 1300 1400 1500 1600 1700 1750 2000 2250 2500 2750; do
rm -rf c$i
hg clone bluebill~android-src c$i
cp bluebill~android-src/.hg/hgrc c$i/.hg
cd c$i
hg strip $i -n
cd ..
done

(first I tried in steps of 250 changesets, then it hang between 1500 and 1750, so I prepare smaller changesets in that range). Then I pushed the stuff with:

#!/bin/sh

set -e
set -x

for i in 250 500 750 1000 1250 1300 1400 1500 1600 1700 1750 2000 2250 2500 2750; do
cd c$i
hg push -f
cd ..
done

"Internal server" error intermittently is displayed on the site during processing of submit actions. most of the time the submit action is processed successfully; however the error is displayed to the user and sometimes an update does not process fully. it happens on several forms including blog entries, the administrative console forum entries and etc.

the tough part about this issue is that there is nothing in the error logs to assist with the troubleshooting

the issue is not related to system resources. researching the issue having to do with an HTML form post loop issue.

hi all,

what do u think if we can have an enterprise wiki in java.net, so we can get curriki.org like in java.net

i believe curriki started from java.net under glec, and that will be awesome for java, if we use the enteprise wiki such as confluence or xwiki

we have JIRA + Confluence, that is fantastic.

There are no plans to add an enterprise wiki to Java.net - it would be prohibitively expensive to add it to our stack and maintain it going forward. Our previous experience with the old twiki wasn't good - too many things to go wrong and not enough manpower to maintain the content of the wiki itself.

At this time we plan to offer the project wikis that are a part of the Kenai platform. Enhancement requests to improve those wikis are welcome at http://kenai.com/jira/browse/KENAI

 Description

this is a placeholder for all the initial steps to create the JCP Community on Java.net. For this task we are repurposing the JRP Community as JCP.

  1. The pmo project has been created and the jcp_pmo user has been given administrator rights
  2. Sonya is looking into why the jrs project returns the "Not Found" message and once resolved will update the project name to "jsrs"
  3. Sonya is compiling a list of the current jsr projects since some are less than 6 months old and after review the appropriate projects will be placed under the jsr-archive project
  4. Patrick will update the JCP Community introductory text at the top of the page (http://community.java.net/jcp)
  5. The outdated items have been removed from the page including the news in the right column and the community items from the feeds in the center main content area
  6. Update all JSR references to JCP

from Patrick:

3. Good point. We should be careful about labeling as "archived" anything that's obviously still alive and active (such as the JavaServer Faces Specification project, for example.) We should probably discuss and reach agreement before moving anything.

4. I also noticed that once we get going we'll need to change some of the entries in the FAQ, since they say that there is no relationship between java.net and the JCP. That will no longer be (quite) true.

5. Looks much better now - thanks

The garbled text under Community Contacts is still there. '); // -->

Comment by fnikola [ 24/May/11 09:35 AM ]

from Patrick...

  1. There's no change on the redirect. http://jcp.java.net still points to the empty index page.
  2. The link to the jsr subproject from http://java.net/projects/jcp still gives a Not Found error. (We were going to change this to jsrs.) However, I'm wondering now whether there's any point to creating a hierarchy of projects and sub-projects since as far as I can tell any such hierarchy would not be visible to users. Am I missing something?
  3. Selecting JCP from the By Community tab on the master list of projects at http://www.java.net/projects leads to a page that still uses the name JSR and contains a link to View all JSR projects.
  4. Many of the projects listed on the master JCP project page (http://www.java.net/community/projects/jcp) contain links that lead to Not Found errors. See, for example, the Specification issues tracking for JSR235 link at the bottom of the first page. This project does actually exist (I could find it by searching) but it's private. Is this Not Found error therefore the result of a bug (should be Access Denied instead?) I thought there were only 19 projects that are part of the JCP community (that's how many show up in the list of projects by community at http://www.java.net/projects/community/143.) However, if the true number is much greater (as shown at http://www.java.net/community/projects/jcp) then maybe we shouldn't be trying to re-purpose this community at all?
  5. Whatever structure we end up with, I assume that if I create a project now I will be able to "move" it to a different community, make it a sub-project of another project that I own, etc?
Comment by fnikola [ 24/May/11 09:41 AM ]

from Sonya...

1. Frank, can you try to set up a temporary redirect for this, and I'll nudge the Kenai team again on doing the permanent one?

2. It will be visible in the CMS and project catalog. I just added the jsrs project as a subproject to jcp, and made jcp_pmo the owner. Any new JSR that comes in should go there, and I'll sort through the older ones to let you know which I think should be archived and which should be moved into jsrs, (or another subproject if it's deemed necessary).

That not found error is a really weird bug. I saw this with a JUG project last week too. I just filed this with Kenai - http://kenai.com/jira/browse/KENAI-2892

3. Frank, can you give an ETA to update this?

4. I'll look into it a little more. Private projects shouldn't appear. I think some of them are that bug 2892 I just filed. I'll add more notes and/or file a different bug if it looks like a different issue.

We made the decision to go with a Not Found error for private projects because the access denied error gives a hacker a goal. The old Java.net site behaved this way as well.

The number is smaller - Frank is working on data cleanup across the site. Right now that list shows every project that was connected with JSR on the old site, but only a few of those were migrated, so the list will go to more 404s.

Frank, is there an ETA for that project?

The reason for repurposing this community is more political than practical - if we were to launch a new, separate JCP community, you'd have campaign for it, and get a vote from the other community leaders. It would be time consuming and I don't know how that would go - a lot of them are very down on Oracle (and they were upset with Sun too, this isn't a new dynamic) and would vote against another Oracle sponsored community (even if it is the JCP) just to be a pain. In the past they have voted down other Sun or Oracle sponsored projects, and when Sun essentially forced us to violate our own charter and stand them up anyway, it got really ugly.

Renaming the old community lets us skirt that process. Slightly slimy on my part? Yes. Corporate reality? That too.

5. If you own both, yes. If not it'll have to be done by me or Tonya for the next couple of months. Frank is working on building out the automated process that will let you do it yourself. We are aiming to launch that at J1 in October.

Comment by fnikola [ 24/May/11 10:10 AM ]

1. I will need someone to set up an A record to point to our 209.189.227.38 server IP address

3. These changes have been completed.

4. The data cleanup should be completed by the end of the week.

Comment by fnikola [ 27/May/11 05:26 AM ]

On May 26, 2011, at 3:35 PM, Patrick Curran wrote:

1. The Projects by Community: JCP page (http://www.java.net/projects/community/143) does not show my new jsr348 project. Why?

Also, how are is the "Featured Projects" list for our community (http://www.java.net/projects/#143) populated? The first two projects listed as "Featured" result in Access Denied error even though they claim to be public.

[Sonya] Both of these are related to the data cleanup Frank is doing. Once the old project data is purged, we're going to have to sync up the two databases. Right now the project is related to the jsrs project and the jcp community in the kenai database, but not yet in the drupal one. I'm hoping to get this all fixed early next week.

[Patrick] OK - if you let me know when that's complete I promise not to bug you about stuff like this until then

[Andrew] hi guys, just jumping in here on this issue. The featured projects page is hard-coded, we just choose three projects from each community to display on this page, and we haven’t updated it since the migration. If you have three in mind just send us the links and we’ll update that page.

[Sonya] Please let us know what projects you want to feature and we'll get those updated. Eventually this will be something you can do on your own as well.

[Patrick] Since the first two listed projects are "not found" (and probably obsolete) please add JSR348 as the first featured project and leave the JSP project as the second (it is active.)

2. While poking around with this I discovered what seems to be an anomaly. Frank had earlier reported "I changed the blog community taxonomy to JCP for the http://www.java.net/blogs/community/90 page."

On the assumption that the final portion of these URLs is a community ID why do we have two (143 and 90?) Is this perhaps the cause of the failure to be able to view the JSR project, which might have been the original "container" for the old community?

Or, maybe I'm just jumping to conclusions...

[Sonya] Frank can address this one.

[Patrick] OK - thanks...

[Frank] They are two different variables. The 143 is the internal community ID and the 90 is the taxonomy ID for the blogs.

Comment by fnikola [ 03/Jun/11 12:13 PM ]

The data cleanup has been completed with 4260 projects deleted include a few jrs projects.

All the remaining 19 jcp community projects exist on Kenai now.

Comment by fnikola [ 25/Jan/12 05:41 AM ]

The JCP community has been implemented on java.net. Any further updates will require new enhancements.

The Website SCM Hook does not work for my TrueZIP project. It ignores my pushes to my Mercurial repository at ssh://hg.java.net/truezip~web.

The Help page says there should be a tab for the hooks, but there isn't.

I've already deleted the hook, the website feature and the repository and then recreated the repository, the website feature and the hook and finally pushed to the new repository, but without any success. The website is just showing an empty page http://truezip.java.net.

Please help - I urgently need to publish the documentation for my latest release!
