I asked on stackoverflow but thought I would ask here as well: Is there any way to do a "general" search server-side using javamail with gmail?
Put another way: I'd love to get the same list of messages that https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#search/foobar produces. (search for foobar across all mail except spam and trash, like searching the "[Gmail]/All Mail" folder)

I believe using SearchTerm searches on the content after it is downloaded locally, so that isn't workable. Or is there some sneaky way of having the search executed server-side?

I answered this in stackoverflow too, but...

The predefined SearchTerms are translated into an IMAP SEARCH command and the search is done on the server.

Maybe what you're looking for is the Gmail-specific raw search supported by the gimap package. You'll need to do the search on the "[Gmail]/All Mail" folder if you want the effect of searching all folders.
