Dear specleads, experts,
I meanwhile talked to our application engineering guys and now can confirm
that we do have customers that use UDP server functionality. Well, obviously
they do it unencrypted today, but with a look into the future where data
encryption and security will become more and more crucial DTLS server should
be a useful feature. For some applications UDP is just easier to handle than
having some TCP connections. Also as we agreed in our last telco CLDC based
devices are not only clients. In many setups they are servers which allow
external clients to get or set some data in the device.
So I would like to repeat my original statement and strongly suggest that we
include DTLS server functionality into the spec.
Regarding the "work around":
Yes, implementing DTLS server on top of the UDPDatagramConnection should be
possible but that most likely means having a second TLS stack implementation
in a system. And that doesn't sound like a good idea on devices where memory
is always critical.
Have a nice weekend

Subject: [jsr360-observers] [jsr360-experts] JSR 360 EG call notes - August
Dear JSR 360 experts,
Here are the notes from the JSR 360 call on August 7th.
Thomas Lampart, Gemalto M2M GmbH
Erkki Rysä, North Sixty-One Ltd
Michael Lagally, Oracle
Roger Riggs, Oracle
* Review Comments on the JSR 360 EG draft of the PR specification
The version numbers in the @since tags for CLDC will
be aligned with the JDK
conventions, i.e. we will consistently use CLDC1.8.
Thomas noted that there's an asymmetry in the DTLS
support of GCF, where the
API only provides client-side support. The spec leads
commented that there appear not
to be enough use cases for CLDC to justify the
additional burden of including server-side
DTLS into the platform. Discussion about the use for
a DTLS server in M2M scenarios.
Michael noted, that an application could implement a
DTLS server on top of UDPDatagramConnection.
EG members are requested to provide feedback about
the use of DTLS in their companies
and to identify concrete use cases during the PR
phase of the JSR and to provide feedback by October 2nd at the latest.
* Public Review
The public review of JSR 360 will take place Aug 27th-Sept 23rd.
All JSR 360 EG members present on the call agreed to
proceed with the public review.
SpecLeads will send the PR draft to the JCP PMO in
The final review is planned for November/December.
* Next Call
The regular bi-weekly EG call is postponed for the
upcoming weeks and will be resumed on demand.
