Dear Experts,

Sorry to throw this onto you, I just thought it could be of interest and even potentially relevant to CLDC, MEEP or both. While the challenge of ICU4J being between 6 and 9 MB footprint alone makes it already a bit tricky for Android (ICU4C is used there under the hood, but unless there's a way to properly use that via JNI it does not help Java libraries in need of all or parts of ICU4J) not to mention this space, I'm looking into smaller implementations of Unit-API for this space. As mentioned a while ago, the actual org.unitsofmeasurement libraries are currently under 30kb in size. A good i18n and formatting support by ICU4J beside the concept of Unit and Measure built-in makes it attractive, but other implementations or smaller versions of UOMo may use different frameworks where necessary.

Where a runtime like Concierge sounds appealing is the Service concept for MEEP. I know, with Jigsaw and the ServiceLoader concept one may think, Oracle and those JSRs won't fancy OSGi, but many projects including UOMo or main APIs of JSR 354 show, that both is possible. On one hand supporting existing mechanisms like the CurrencyNameProvider and similar SPIs, on the other hand making the libraries also available as OSGi bundles.

Pity we didn't hear about it sooner, some of us might have enjoyed chatting with the authors from ETH Zurich while we were there

Regards,
Werner

Another new project proposal that is very relevant in the M2M space.
Concierge is a very small OSGi runtime.

A couple of things were not entirely apparent from the proposal:

-          Which JVM type(s) are targeted?  (ME, SE, SE embedded, etc.)

-          Why the goal of running on version 1.4 JVMs?  Seems a major compromise and a big security risk since even 1.6 VM's are now close to being EOL'ed

Hi Rick,

I suggest you ask these questions on the dedicated thread on the Eclipse forum: http://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/t/488319/

Benjamin.
